Read why this fast-growing industry is important to Ohio.

Polymer Nanotechnology, a term that will soon be able to stand on it’s own to represent advancements in many areas of the polymer industry. This technology promises to have a significant impact on many polymer-based products, therefore making it a fast growing industry for Ohio in the near future.

The Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanomaterials & Devices (CMPND), centered at The Ohio State University, collaborates with the University of Akron and the University of Dayton toward the advancement of nanotechnology. Through their work with several universities in Ohio, the National Composite Center, and more than 60 other polymer organizations, CMPND will have statewide economic impact.

By 2010, the demand for nanocomposites is expected to grow to nearly 350 million pounds, with projections of over 7 billion pounds by 2020. These advances in growth will be fueled by the declining prices of nanomaterials, driven by increasing production and overcoming technology issues.

Nanotechnology will enable fast growth in many areas, including:

  • Resins such as engineered plastics and thermoplastic elastomers
  • Polypropylene
  • Polyethylene and PVC
  • Packaging applications
    • Soft drinks
    • Beer
    • Food
    • Pharmaceuticals
    • Electronics
  • Improved barrier, strength and conductive properties
  • Motor vehicles
    • Replace higher priced materials
    • Increase production speed of parts
    • Reduce vehicle weight through exterior, interior, and under the hood applications

The big question for today is this: Are YOU using nanotechnology? Do you see a future application for this technology in your company or organization?
