By using its thriving Plastics Engineering Technology program as a starting point, Shawnee State University (SSU) has again gone the extra mile to pump up the jobs pipeline for Ohio’s polymer industry. On March 23rd, 2012 SSU sponsored Plastics Day, an annual event that highlighted Ohio’s plastics industry and served as a recruiting event for SSU to help raise enrollment in the program. PolymerOhio, a polymer industry-specific Ohio Edison Technology Center funded by the Ohio Economic Development Agency, was invited to send two representatives to Plastics Day: Wayne Earley, CEO, and Kevin Cunningham, Manager, Outreach & Engineering Solutions and an SSU alumnus. The SSU event was closely aligned with PolymerOhio’s mission, which focuses on enhancing the global competitiveness of the Ohio polymer industry, including companies from the plastics, rubber, bioproducts, and advanced materials segments. |

Innovation needs to be more than a buzzword that companies use to build an image. Innovation needs to be managed in an aggressive and savvy manner, so that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can turn their very important problems and opportunities into profitable growth. Recognizing this critical management need, the Federal government’s NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) network has partnered with Eureka! Ranch and Merwyn Research to help companies understand and implement a structured Innovation Engineering Management System (IEMS) that helps companies to accelerate the process of creating, communicating, and commercializing innovation. |

Two local manufacturing companies hosted VIP tours Wednesday [February 22, 2012] that underscored calls for reforming and improving work force training in Ohio. The visits are amid revelations that up to 80,000 jobs in Ohio are going unfilled because workers aren’t qualified, despite prolonged high state and national unemployment. Gov. John Kasich has said the state’s work force training system is in “total breakdown,” and is fragmented by being spread into 77 programs across 13 agencies, all depending on various state and federal funding sources. Kasich’s made a priority of overhauling the system. |

Here’s a problem faced by many small-to-medium-sized polymer enterprises (SMEs) – How to ship a less-than-a-truckload (LTL) lot for a reasonable cost. Many such SMEs approach shippers and ask for a discount. Usually, they get a reduction from the standard quote, and it might even be as high as 70 percent. While this sounds good, for smaller producers and manufacturers, even that shipping rate could be a rather pricey item.
Thanks to a new program available to PolymerOhio member companies, an even higher discount is now available for LTL loads. N. Eugene (Gene) Graves, Executive Director of the United Shippers Alliance (USA), a nonprofit shippers organization, based in central Ohio, said, “Our program for LTL shippers is arranged with UPS Freight for nationwide coverage and should be most competitive for SMEs with smaller annual LTL activity.” |
