It began in 2005 when Replex Plastics president, Mark A. Schuetz, purchased a rundown industrial building near the downtown area of Mt. Vernon, Ohio. When Schuetz says the building looked a lot different at the time of purchase, he is making a huge understatement. It looked pathetic. “What we had was an industrial eyesore in a neighborhood that is mostly commercial with some residential,” he explained. “Cosmetically it was horrible because the building had deteriorated due to neglect by the previous owner. Energy-wise, it was only insulated to an ‘R’ value of about 7, and over the course of our energy remodeling, we got the R-value up to about 30. The city and the neighbors are happy because we addressed the cosmetic problems at the same time that we fixed the energy problems.” |

PolymerOhio and the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) were awarded first-year funding of $355,000 by the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Program for a project to assist small- and mid-sized polymer companies (SMPCs) in improving their productivity through advanced modeling and simulation of manufacturing processes and functions. The MEP, a part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST; part of the US Department of Commerce), includes over 400 centers, partners, and offices across the nation. Through the “Polymer ePortal,” the PolymerOhio-OSC project will provide low-cost access for SMPCs to productivity-enhancing software and training on the software that would not otherwise have been available to them because of the high cost of licenses and lack of trained employees. |

What The Andersons, a diversified company with interests in the grain, ethanol, and plant nutrient sectors of U.S. agriculture, as well as in railcar leasing and repair, turf products production, industrial products, and general merchandising has learned from working with several universities, notably The Ohio State University (OSU) is this: “We are having an extremely positive experience working with universities, but it has required an ongoing discussion of what is of value to us from the university and was isn’t,” said Charlie Carr, Manager, Business Development for Plant Nutrients. “Some of this has been due to a lack of real-world experience from some university researchers; they have academic experience and knowledge, and that has to combine with our business experience to make the outcome of the relationship more positive.” |
